DITCH HAND SANITIZER!
WHEN CLEANING goes bad…
For years we were taught to fear the invisible germs that lurk everywhere, and the only way to rid ourselves of them was to use antibacterial soaps, sprays, and sanitizers in our homes and on our bodies. Clorox and Lysol have become household names, and we can purchase hand sanitizer in every color and scent imaginable. THIS JUST IN: everything the FDA told us about these products isn’t true, and they released a statement last month saying that these antibacterial agents do nothing to make soap work any better and they have not be proven to be safe. In fact, some data suggests that antibacterial ingredients may do more harm than good over the long-term.
HAND SANITIZER: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
- Triclosan, found in most hand sanitizers, kills both GOOD AND BAD bacteria, which can lead to your body becoming resistant to antibiotics. Research has shown that Triclosan can lead to hormone disruption.
- The synthetic fragrances in hand sanitizers contain pthalates which may also disrupt hormones. Also, trade secrets function like copyright laws allowing companies to simply list the word “fragrance” in the ingredients list without being held accountable for listing what the fragrance contains.
- Most hand sanitizers contain 60-95% isopropyl alcohol which is very drying to the skin, especially in the winter months.

If you are wanting to try a DIY, I really like this one and use it in my classroom. The boys like it especially. I have to watch them or they will take a bath in it!
